Within this product, you will find the items I use to teach the very first stages of adding using the number line. In the student activity, students will be rolling numbers for the equations; this helps the practice to feel more like a ‘game’ rather than just worksheet practice.

Number card sets, in case you don’t have number cubes or dice
Before introducing addition on the number line, I first teach other strategies to build conceptual understanding of addition. Prior to this lesson, I also teach a lesson that introduces the number line; in that lesson, students share noticings about the number line and have an opportunity to create their own number line. I laminate that number line, or take another laminated number line for students to use during the guided practice part of the lesson that is included in this product.
I introduce the concept of addition on the number line, then separately introduce subtraction on the number line – before having students work with both addition and subtraction on the number line. I want to be sure students have conceptual understanding of each skill before combining that work.
