This resource is designed to be used in guided reading.
First - identify the words you would like your students to be able to practice using context clues with. These words need to have context within the text or text features that could accurately lead the student to understand the meaning of the word.
Next - fill in the words and the page number(s) the words can each be found on.
~Before meeting with the reading group, give them the graphic organizer. Tell them to use their background knowledge to complete the first column labeled "before reading." It is OK if they don't know the word, just encourage them to use their knowledge of roots, etc. to come up with an idea. I let my students write a question mark if they really don't know.
~During the group meeting, have students pair and share their responses. Then, model finding the first word and using your context clues to identify the meaning. Record what you think the word means under the "after reading" column. Give students time to do the same with the rest of the words.
~ After - use the glossary, or provide a dictionary, for students to check the definition of each work and record "yes" or "no" if they were right.
