This assessment checks student understanding of using context clues while reading. Students must read a short passage about plants and animals of the tropical rainforest, then use context clues to identify the meanings of six words in the text.
Types of context clues:
- parentheses after the word
- examples of the word
- synonyms and antonyms within the sentence
- using a comma after the word, followed by "which is" or "or"
For three of the words, students choose a definition from multiple choice options. For the other three words, students must write what the word means in the space provided.
