This warm up exercise is a great way to get students thinking about how to read effectively. Basic words in the reading have been replaced with complicated euphemisms. Students must rely on basic word knowledge and context clues in order to decipher important words in the plot. The activity is rather like a puzzle requiring students to use critical thinking skills and inquiry. Students may work independently or in pairs to guess the answers. Reviewing the answers together as a class may account for up to thirty minutes of instruction. Can be used as bell work, a mini lesson, or a start in class and finish on your own homework assignment. Great illustration of how to use context clues on complicated vocabulary words without running to a dictionary.
