Included are the items I use to teach the concept of ‘counting on’ to add in a more efficient way. Before introducing counting on with fingers, it is important that students understand why that strategy works. Building with cubes helps students to make sense of this concept in the early stages. Students will practice this strategy with a 'game' - they'll roll their number cubes to find an equation; they'll add using cubes and you'll help push them towards counting on. You can collect some data about their skills as you give them the exit ticket that correlates with the lesson.
