Using Data to Drive Instruction in Concepts About Print
Developed for Kindergarten and Grade One Teachers
A Concepts About Print assessment allows teachers to observe what students have learned about the way language is recorded in print. The early home and preschool experiences prior to formal schooling result in significantly varied personal experiences with print and books. The tasks within a Concepts About Print observation provides valuable formative data about what children have noticed in print, what they have ignored, and the confusions they may have developed. Knowing what a child is attending to (whether it is correct or not) prepares the teacher for the necessary instruction to advance student learning. This product was developed to support teachers through the data collection process, analysis, and the instructional actions necessary for individual student growth.
This product includes:
• An overview of Concepts About Print
• Concepts About Print Skills Checklist
• Teacher Administration and Scoring Directions
• An Excel spreadsheet for entering student data
• Suggestions for integrating Concepts About Print tasks in daily instruction
• Parent/Guardian Support Connection
Securing early literacy--enjoy!
