A good friend of mine shared this thought with me a few years ago. How can we get our students to use and understand decimals? Help them to apply what they are learning to real - world situations. Since the Presidential Election is quickly approaching, I thought I would put this practice into action.
In this activity, students will be given $1,000 in which they must use to pay for a three day - two night stay in Washington, DC in preparations for the Presidential Inauguration Activities. They must determine where they will stay, what they will eat, how they will get around in Washington (transportation), souvenirs, snacks, etc. Once they determine how much each day will cost them, they will them determine the total expenses for the three days.
What better way to help students to compare, order, and round decimals than to have them to determine if they spent less than, more than, or the exact amount of the $1,000?
