Mean, Median, Mode, and Range Lesson with Go Fish Cards from the Dollar store
I wanted to come up with a simple hands on way to demonstrate mean, median, mode, and range. The students in sixth grade thought the Mickey Mouse Go Fish Cards from the Dollar Tree were fun. You could use any kind of Go Fish Cards you wanted for this lesson.
The lesson contains five tasks:
• Finding the mean
• Finding the median
• Finding the mode
• Finding the range
• Creating a line plot using the mode from one of the stations
This lesson is perfect for groups. It is set up for 8 stations, but this is a Word document so you can edit the document if you want to have a different number of stations.
Standard: 6.SP.5c Giving quantitative measures of center (mean, median, and mode)
Standard: 6.SP5d relating the choice of center and variability to the shape of the data distribution and the context in which the data were gathered. (line plots, dot plots)
You could use this lesson to review mean, median, mode, and range. Once the students rotate through the groups they will have tons of practice without completing many worksheets!
I have included a teacher sheet with pictures on how we used the cards for each activity. I hope your students enjoy this lesson as much as we did.
