Product Description
This product is a comprehensive text structure unit built around a reading workshop (balanced literacy) methodology. Through your use of this unit you will expose your students to authentic, non-fiction texts and teach them not only HOW to identify text structure, but WHY identifying text structure helps us become better readers.

The unit is meant to cover about two and half weeks of instruction (it can easily be lengthened or shortened) and can be used in 3rd-5th grades. It includes:

Lessons
-20 lessons over text structure, 10 meant for 3rd grade and 10 meant for 4-5th. The 3rd grade lessons cover less text structures (description, compare and contrast, cause and effect, chronological order), and spend more time on each one.

-The 4-5th plans cover all of the text structures already listed as well as problem and solution, and categorical. These are chosen based on the common core standards for each grade.

-The lesson plans are versatile enough that lessons can be chosen from either grade (if you wanted to speed things up or slow them down).
-Each lesson plan includes these components:
Stated Objective
Read Aloud
Mini-Lesson (an analysis of the read aloud)
Independent Reading (always with a focus)
Guided Reading and Conferences (to be conducted during reading time)
Share/Evaluation

-After students learn how to identify all of the text structures, they explore how to use this ability to make better sense of non-fiction texts. Mini-lessons during this section of the unit include lessons such as “Reading patterns become thinking patterns; Recognizing text structure helps readers organize and remember information.”

Workshop Materials
Resources are provided for every step of the reading workshop process.

-Read Aloud: Selected excerpts from the mentor texts are typed into provided powerpoints to facilitate class discussion/analysis. Suggested discussion questions are included.

-Mini-Lesson: Sample anchor charts to help focus the mini-lesson and build a classroom resource.

-Independent Reading: Materials for students to record examples of text structure that they find while reading their non-fiction books independently. Rubrics are included and these assignments can be used as a formal number grade.

-Guided Reading: Teacher cards cover every step of the guided reading lesson and offer suggestions for using guided reading to reinforce the mini-lessons and read alouds. Record sheet is included.

-Conferences: Conference record sheet along with sentence starters to guide conferences.

-Share/Evaluation-A checklist to evaluate student’s responses. Can be used to calculate a number grade. Rubrics included where necessary

“How Did The Author Build This?” Activity
Twenty short, non fiction passages about different types of buildings. Each passage is accompanied by a graphic organizer. The text structure of the passage is identified and students must determine its components. So if the text structure is cause and effect, students must list the cause and the effect. This is great for partner and group work. This product can also be purchased individually:

Test Preparation Component
This includes three days of lesson plans, activities and an assessment. It is meant to be done toward the end of the unit. It includes 10 short, informational passages with two text structure questions each. There is a teacher powerpoint that can be used to display these passages and questions, so that a few can be done as a class.
Also includes two versions of one full-length passage. Choose the one that best fits your student’s needs. This can also be purchased separately:

Organizational Tools
The sequence of all lessons is provided in one chart. There are weekly and daily preparation checklists.

So what would you have to do?
-Request the mentor texts (3-4) from a library.
-Take students to the library to pick out their own non-fiction book to read.
-Make some copies
-Pull up some powerpoint slides to display.
That’s it!

There is also an introduction that includes general suggestions for running a reading workshop.

Thanks for stopping by! I hope this product makes your life easier and makes your student’s reading richer.
