This resource is aligned with the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and the IB MYP Programme Mathematics Criterion B. Its purpose is to introduce the concept of linear functions by exploring trends in various patterns. Students are asked to determine general rules that describe each pattern, and are asked to think reflectively about how their rules make sense, and where they are derived from. From this, students develop an understanding of the basic components of linear functions--starting value and rate of change.
