One of the building blocks of having successful conversations with students about literature is having a basic understanding of the elements of fiction. What is a protagonist? What is rising action?
These terms and concepts can be a relatively boring lesson if not done properly. In these lesson plans I detail how I spend 5 class periods of 56 minutes using Pixar Animation to get kids excited about the elements of fiction.
If a Pixar film has ever brought a smile to your face, this is a great set of lessons for you and your students. When teaching these lessons I use the DVD "Pixar Shorts, Vol 1." (Available for $22 on Amazon) Many of the films referenced in the lesson plans are also available on YouTube.
Take a look at the preview file and decide if this fits your needs. The complete file is 13 pages of plans and ready-to-copy student materials. This is truly one of the most entertaining and engaging weeks of my school year.
