Using Quotation Marks in Dialogue Practice Activity
In this three part practice activity, students will practice using quotation marks correctly to punctuate dialogue.
Part 1 is a collection of seven 8.5 X 11 inches printable informational posters. The posters present information about using quotation marks in dialogue and speaker tags located at the beginning, middle and end of sentences containing dialogue.
Part 2 is a collection of twelve half page activity cards. We have included lines so the “cards” can be cut apart if you wish. These are designed to reinforce the correct use of quotation marks in dialogue. Each card has a sentence of dialogue with a speaker tag. The speaker tag locations are varied (four at the beginning, four in the middle, four at the end). Students answer questions about each example sentence (who is the speaker, what are the speaker’s exact words), copy the sentence (to reinforce the correct use of quotation marks) and write a sentence of their own. We have included a printable answer key for the cards so students may check themselves.
Part 3 is a collection of five story starters, each containing a small amount of dialogue. These are designed to give students opportunities to practice punctuating dialogue with quotation marks in a piece of their original writing.
Please see our preview file for examples of each of the three parts of this activity.
