This unit centers around two essential questions:
(1) What is our responsibility to others, our community, and our society?
(2) How do our beliefs, words, and actions affect those around us?
This unit focuses on three short stories--"The Most Dangerous Game," "The Sniper," and "Disguises"--as vehicles for exploring these questions. The unit includes formative and summative assessments such as graphic organizers, writing prompts, creative writing, and activities for the stories. The section on "The Sniper" incorporates newspaper articles about the 10th anniversary of the D.C. sniper shootings to encourage students to make real-world connections. The section on "Disguises" includes an article and editorial on a specific event from Hurricane Sandy to spark discussion on morality. Finally, the unit includes an essay-writing activity modeled after "This I Believe."
* This unit does not include any quizzes or tests.
