I created this project as a way to forge connections with a group of students in an alternative setting. Communication in the classroom, at least to start, was essentially non-existent. However, the students had absolutely no problem posting/connecting with friends and family on Facebook!
A core component of this outreach program was to increase student communication in the classroom (constructive communication, in my opinion, leads to the creation of meaningful relationships). Utilizing Facebook as an outlet for communication (with classmates and myself) proved to be a fantastic way to forge a connection with students who, traditionally, were extremely disconnected from the education process.
Not only did this project allow my students to connect with their fellow classmates, it was also instrumental in allowing me to keep in contact with them (most had a travel quite a distance to get to school and the program only ran twice a week). Furthermore, I found that this project served as a replacement for learning logs (I would have the students, once a week, post something on their learning process).
This project is appropriate for a number of subjects/programs. However, I found it especially helpful for: Outreach, Language Arts, Planning and Photography.
Included in the package: 1) Project outline, 2) Marking Rubric for Project, 3) Bonus Photography assignment and rubric (that can be easily modified to fit other courses) and 4) Prescribed Learning Outcomes (from the BC Curriculum).
