Product Description

For this assignment, students use the beginning of The Bluest Eye (the page after Dick & Jane, and the first few pages of Autumn), to improve their claim-writing abilities. The worksheet is structured so that they can see the differences between the SEXEXY structure, the method of argumentative writing they used in 10th grade, and the Assertion Paragraph, a Pre-AP writing strategy they will use in 11th grade.

Once they see the difference, they will complete the graphic organizer that follows by improving the weak claims provided. I chose to include a question, a weak claim, and evidence from the text because I wanted students to focus on improving the assertion and using it to write a new paragraph. However, you could revise this however you'd like!
