PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

If your kids are anything like mine, they are constantly mixing up the words "there", "their", and "they're". Help them see the difference between these commonly misused words with this 13-slide powerpoint and printables set, and address language standards from the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.

Common Core Standards addressed –
• Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. (L.3.1, L.4.1, L.5.1)
• Correctly use frequently confused words (e.g., to, too, two; there, their) (L.4.1g)

This activity set includes:
• 13-slide interactive powerpoint
• half-page student journal insert describing the usage of "their", "there", and "they're"
• printable student worksheet (fill-in-the-blank)
• electronic student worksheet (with pull-down menus)
• worksheet answer key

Use the powerpoint to introduce the words "there", "their", and "they're". The first slide describes the usage of the words, and the final slide reviews how to use the three words. The 10 middle slides present students with three sentences, identified as A, B, and C, and students identify the sentence that shows correct usage. You can have students work in pairs, small groups, or on their own, and they can show their answers on small dry erase boards, using index cards labeled with the answers A, B, and C, or any other method of all pupil response that you use in your classroom. The majority of the text and graphics are timed to appear; the "notes" section of the slides contains specific details about the animations in each slide.

After the powerpoint, have your students glue the half-sheet journal insert in their language arts journal as a handy reference when writing.

Wrap everything up with the included worksheet, provided to give your students with more practice using "their", "there", and "they're". There is a printable version in which students will fill in blanks with the proper word. There is also an electronic version of the worksheet – a Word document formatted to provide students with pull-down menus for each blank. [If you have access to a computer lab, the electronic version is an easy way to prepare your students for computer-based assessments!] When the students have completed the worksheet – written as the beginning of a narrative about three little penguins and a big, bad walrus –, have them continue the story on their own for further practice with "there", "their", and "they're".
