This activity includes:
A PowerPoint that defines allegory and displays each of Thomas Cole's paintings in his series The Voyage of Life. These paintings are ultimately about man's journey through life and Cole uses imagery to portray this allegory. In the first painting, a baby travels on a boat with an angel overlooking him and by the last painting there is an elderly man who is being met by angels leading him into a parting in the clouds.
A worksheet that allows students to note their observations about the paintings. The worksheet also leads students through a short answer response (formatted for Texas STAAR assessment: answer, evidence, explanation) by offering students a model and space for the student to create their own short answer response.
An Excel rubric for the student's short answers in which you can rate the student's response on a few descriptors and the sheet with automatically calculate a fitting grade (although, I do believe that I ended up adding 10 additional points to each student's grade). (To use, type Y, P, or N in the blank column)
