Students generate a graph to discover the patterns in tides and how they relate to the moon. CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS and a STEP-BY-STEP process lead students to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between the moon and tides.
Lesson Outline: First, students use a Daily Tide Chart to complete the worksheet “Using a Tide Chart”. This familiarizes them with reading and working with the tide chart. Second, students graph the tide chart data. I find it helpful to make groups of three, so each student only graphs one third of the data. Students combine their graphs to make one long month of a tide graph! At the end, students complete the “Tide Graph Analysis” half worksheet. This paper instructs them on how to make some simple additions to their graph (labeling neap and spring tides, moon phases, etc.) and asks some analysis questions.
