Product Description
The first day of school is both exciting and overwhelming for students. I decided a couple of years ago that I didn’t want to bombard students with more rules and procedures on the first day in my classroom. Instead, I wanted to use course content to engage and challenge them. Thus, this matching activity was born. As an extra bonus, this activity helps to answer the question I get year after year – “why do we have to take English every year?” This resource is a perfect first day of school activity for secondary English classes.

About this product:
Grammar errors are quite commonplace, and with social media, they can be embarrassing! That reason does inspire many students to take the study of English more seriously.   I believe that it is important for students to be able to “speak the language” of English. For them to be able to move forward in their learning, they must be able to recognize and by term identify things like parts of speech, phrases and clauses, run-ons and fragments and so on.
This activity combines actual social media tweets and the language of grammar. It requires that students use the language of English to identify the mistake. Students quickly realize how much knowledge they lack in their native language! It is the perfect activity to use on the first day or in the first week of English class, but it can be used as a filler, for review or as a great end of the year game. It will challenge students, and hopefully, will emphasize exactly why English is both a necessary and required subject!
