The lesson plan demonstrates one method of using an online simulation “game” to promote civic awareness and constructivist learning in the secondary social studies classroom. The lesson focuses on the ongoing genocide occurring in the Darfur region of Sudan. It can be used to support instruction in civics, global studies, geography and other social studies courses where the concept of genocide is examined. The lesson is designed specifically for use in secondary level (grades 9 -12) classrooms. It uses the free online simulation Darfur is Dying to actively engage students in an examination of Darfur and the concept of genocide. During the lesson students conduct an in-depth inquiry on what is occurring in Darfur. Each phase of the inquiry should be supported with appropriate scaffolds and structure. The processes in which students collect evidence, using a modified KWL, will help them better understand and appreciate what is occurring in Darfur, even as it assist them to develop inquiry skills that can be used in other learning situations.
