Mental Math Units: the Complete Subtraction Collection
Using Doubles is a mental math strategy that involves using what students know about addition doubles (5+5, 3+3, etc.) in order to solve subtraction equations such as 12-6=___. Building on Doubles takes this one step further and utilizes near doubles addition strategies such as "Doubles Plus One" in order to solve a subtraction equation such as 13-6=___.
It is imperative that students have a good understanding of the addition strategies of "Doubles" and "Double Plus One" before learning these subtraction strategies. It is well worth your time to ensure that students have an excellent grasp of the addition strategies before beginning the corresponding subtraction strategies.
This mental math strategy pack includes materials and printables that will help your students learn and practice the mental math subtraction strategies of using doubles and building on doubles. Included is independent seat work, flashcards, center activities, large group kinesthetic learning activities and more!
