This 28-slide PowerPoint Presentation and 10-page lesson plan on Utopia vs. Dystopia challenges students to think critically about their personal and social worlds. Students are asked to consider some pointed questions about what it means to live in a perfect society and if such a thing is possible. By using Ursula Le Guin's short story, "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas", students can discuss the "perfect world" through a variety of project activities and short essay questions. This lesson plan can be adapted to include larger literary works, such as Brave New World, 1984 or The Handmaid's Tale. A suggested answer key and rubrics are also included. This unit can be taught in a short duration or a longer period.
