About this Unit Notebook
This is a complete student workbook for the VDOE SOL unit 1 as suggested by Fairfax County Public Schools. The file is set up as an interactive notebook for students. It's written so that there is minimal language; the focus is on the math. It was designed to support the needs of students with executive functioning issues (organization), language and processing disabilities, and memory disabilities. It is aligned with Virginia State Standards of Learning, and allows students to access the general education curriculum. This unit covers the real number system, ordering real numbers, approximating irrational numbers, and operating with irrational numbers.
Prepping the notes for the students:
I usually print out the entire unit and give it to students at the start. Handing it out this way makes organization for the kids easier. It also allows you to reliably assign review from previous pages. You'll need to three-hole punch the pages beforehand. The kids will need a three ring binder to hold the notes. I have my kids use a small binder for the current unit of study, and keep a large binder at home for previous units we're no longer working on in class.
Guided Notebook Structure
The entire notebook is bookmarked and structured in sections. Each section starts with a background or launch statement/activity. Then students do three examples. The examples can be done by the teacher, with the students, or can be student centered provided some scaffolding is done beforehand. The appendix includes vocabulary and study guides. Additionally at the start of each guided notebook, there is a pre-test. The pre-test is standards based and could be included as part of a teacher's data set for performance review. The letter home is also a great way to get families involved in understanding the unit.
