What are “Mystery Word” lessons?
”Mystery Word” lessons are based on the Making Words lesson format. In these lessons, students are guided through the making words process by manipulating only the letters they are given and using concise directions from you to make nine different 2-5 letter words.
After the students have made all the words, they then get to make the mystery word using all of their letters.
I have added a writing component to this lesson for extra spelling and writing practice.
After the lesson is complete, you also have the option of placing the word cards used in the lesson at a literacy center for the students to sort according to parameters you set such as words that rhyme or sounds in words.
This lesson is perfect for differentiation because students are given time to check their own work and understanding after you display the word and before the whole class/group moves on to the next word together.
