Description

Are you looking for an unplugged introduction to variables for your upper elementary or middle school computer science students? This activity introduces variables in the context of function parameters. After a scaffolded introduction, students will write an algorithm using functions and variables / parameters, then follow three algorithms to draw the "mystery pictures".

This activity is designed to follow my mystery picture drawing algorithms with functions activity, or another brief introduction to functions. You could also use it without introducing functions first, though this may be more challenging for students.

You can print all four activity pages for your students. To save paper, you can also display the first two for the whole class to discuss and complete as examples, then give the students the next two pages to complete themselves.

An answer key is also included.
