Students have a hard time remembering the order of the Scientific Method-- but an even harder time APPLYING it and deciding which part of an experiment is the QUESTION or Purpose? the Hypothesis? My colorful GraphiQ MAP of the Wheel of the Scientific Method helps students to visualize completing an Experimental Investigation. Then, the colorful MAP for Independent, Dependent, & Controlled VARIABLES helps them to know which is which and then, to IDENTIFY them in an EXPERIMENT example. PLACE the Dry MIx helper onto the GRAPH axes to GRAPH the VARIABLES and ID them-- from a Graph. Learn which type of Graph to use-- BAR or LINE (even PIE- and know that this is really a survey or poll and not a true TEST or experiment!) from a given set of DATA. Practice using each with my 3 SHOW ME THE DATA! Activities. Finally, there is a READ & ANALYZE How the US TESTS new MEDs Practice Activity, and a separate Practice Sheet with KEY, and a QUIZ with a KEY for Assessment. I've even thrown in my 5E Plans and GOALS4WEEK sheet to Preview Vocabulary! (It's hard to imagine, but this is only about one-fourth of the files from my complete Scientific Method & Variables UNIT!)
MY ConceptCARDS allow for APPLICATION of these concepts (high-order thinking skill) with 2 different Scientific Experiment examples. PLACE each ConceptCARD (broken into each part of the Scientific Method) on the WHEEL OF SCIENTIFIC METHOD! INDEPENDENT? DEPENDENT? CONTROLLED? What are the VARIABLES and how do you know? Can you IDENTIFY them in an EXPERIMENT? How do we GRAPH them? USE DRY MIX! There are so many ways to use these ConceptCARDS and MAPS-- I can't list them all! Interactive Notebooks?--shrink to 80% to fit perfectly on a Composition Notebook page. Teacher Small Group? Stations?--laminate a set- cut apart the EXPERIMENT CARDs-- and use them with Small Group or at a Station. It's completely self-directed. Differentiated Learning? -- PERFECT for SpED or ELLs because it requires NO WRITING! Make the MAT into a large POSTER(run through a poster maker) and use as an Interactive Word WALL! Simply attach the cards with sticky tack! THESE great Interactive MAPs cover all 5Es! Use Dry MIx helper to identify the Independent or Dependent VARIABLEs on Graphs. AGAIN, it is an interactive way to practice this, by playing Pin the Dry MIx on the GRAPH! Practice it over and over with my MORE SHOW ME THE DATA! Sets-- Place the reason to use a Bar Graph with a given set of DATA or the reason to use a LINE GRAPH with another Set of DATA. The students will have it in their Journals/Notebooks for reference all year! TESTED in my Science Classroom for 10+ years!
