THE VELVETEEN RABBIT Friendship Diversity Lesson w video link & activities Character Ed PBIS
"The Velveteen Rabbit" is a classic story written by Margary Williams Bianco and is one of my all-time favorites. It tells the story of a boy and a rabbit who love each other. It describes the importance of love and character as opposed to appearance. I love this lesson and believe that it will become a yearly favorite of my students.
This PowerPoint lesson has 15 slides and includes links to a 26-minute video of the book being read aloud by me! The character education lesson helps to teach the importance of caring for others, not because of how they look on the outside, but rather who they are on the inside. It is a great way to teach the importance of character and acceptance of others in this world.
This lesson is perfect for nearly any time of the year, but it is especially perfect for the holiday season and/or for any month in which DIVERSITY is being celebrated.
Activities for your lesson are included along with EXTENSION ACTIVITIES, too. There are many other ideas to use to go along with the lesson that can be modified to fit nearly every age level. If you prefer, there are a multitude of activity ideas that are searchable online.
I would schedule a minimum of 60-90 minutes for this lesson and would probably turn it into at least 2 lessons.
The PowerPoint is customizable and has a master slide that can be copied to make your own slides to personalize the lesson for your students and teaching style. The presentation includes both animations and transitions to hold your students' interest. Make your lesson come alive for your students and help them to connect to the concept in a fun way that will help them to remember the important lessons you need for them to remember.
