VISUAL ARTS: Funky Fundamentals Unit of Work with Super Six Reading Strategies
This resource was designed to be used with Visual Arts students in the Middle School. The unit includes lessons on the Elements of Art—Line, Shape, Colour, Tone, Texture and Form. There are both written and practical activities to accompany each of the Elements of Art.
Each lesson also includes reading strategies from the Super Six— Making Connections, Predicting, Questioning, Monitoring, Visualising and Summarising. There are learning activities to help increase the literacy skills of your students while they learn about the Elements of Art. Students are given opportunity to study different Artists and how they use the Elements of Art in works. Artists include—Victor Vasarely, Henri Matisse and Paul Cezanne. There extension activities on the artists— Wassilly Kandinsky, Rembrandt and William Delafield Cook.
In this resource the pages are deliberately doubled—one coloured version for classroom use on an interactive whiteboard, and a printable version. For my own classes I have enough copies of the printable version for the students to share one between two. Students then write into their workbooks/Art Diaries OR you could copy and hand out the worksheets that accompany each lesson—the choice is yours.
Available for free at my store is the Word Wall I have printed, laminated and displayed in my classroom that accompanies this unit of work.
For the classroom version, I usually incorporate links to music using youtube OR an MP3 file that is to be played while students are working. For copyright reasons I cannot include the listening examples I use—but they are easily inserted into the PDF file. To do this go to Tools—Insert Media OR Link—draw a box on the PDF where you want it—browse file or insert link. When doing this I save the file after each new addition but check it first!!! That way you don’t end up with the wrong files in there.
