Have you heard of FREERICE.com??? It was launched in 2007, as a non-profit site, to develop students’ vocabulary. Subject content has grown to include: -English Vocabulary -English Grammar -Humanities -Math -German -Spanish -Italian -Latin -Chemistry -Geography -Science - SAT Test Preparation
Students earn 10 grains of rice for every correct answer. The United Nations World Food Program, through sponsors that pay for the rice, has donated rice to more than 70 countries.
The site determines a starting level with questions of increasing difficulty. Levels are automatically adjusted based on student’s answers. If a question is incorrect, it reverts to an easier level. 3 correct answers will move a student to a higher level. The rice earned accumulates in a bowl; every time 100 grains are earned, the bowl empties & you will see a bowl of 100 appear in the corner.
My classes focused on VOCABULARY (60 Levels) & GRAMMAR (5 levels). To record students’ progress, I created a STUDENT RECORD SHEET for VOCABULARY & GRAMMAR, as well as GRAINS of RICE donated.
GREAT ACTIVITY for a learning center; when a student finishes assignments & has extra time, or in a computer lab setting. My students would do it at home, too! Other members of their family would also earn rice!
