Isn't it wonderful when you can cross-curricular! These 20 Science passages are great for using in your small reading groups or for independent practice for your strong readers. They are also great to pull out for a sub.
They were written with Virginia 2nd and 3rd grade SOLS in mind, but would likely work well for most curriculum. I generally read them with my students the first time, and pull out the boldfaced vocabulary words for support. Then I have students read independently. Each passage has students searching for answers within the text, making connections, and drawing their own conclusions. They also contain a quick parts of speech search.
