Anticipation guides are a great way to start off a new unit - this particular guide provides 6 statements about the turn of the 20th century in Virginia (transportation technology, change from rural to urban, agricultural to industrial, growth of Northern VA due to federal jobs, etc.) First, the kids check off "True" or "False" next to each statement in the prediction column. Then, after you specify correlated textbook pages for them to read, the students search for the facts to determine if they are true or false. If they are false, the kids have to fix the part of the statement that's wrong. My kids love doing this so that they can see how close their guesses were to the facts - good unit opener!
