Description

Your students will have Valentine fun practicing math skills as they participate in a real-life application! NOTE: You will need to provide each student with a box of Valentine candy hearts or a small cup of hearts from a large bag.

Students will sort by color and count their hearts, then create fractions, decimals, and percents. There is room for great mathematical discussions.

Students will create a funny or cute new saying to go on hearts. Oh, and they'll eat them, of course! I've included clear directions with photos.

There are two formats. You can choose the best one for your students:

• a one-page activity
• the activity split across two pages

Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Solve problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions by using information presented in line plots. For example, from a line plot find and interpret the difference in length between the longest and shortest specimens in an insect collection.
