    Description

Valentine-themed science to create excitement about sinking and floating. Get the complete grade-level series for a bundle discount. Explores density, buoyancy, and how life jackets work. Aligned to NGSS. Jam-packed with an investigation, station ideas, exploration challenge, and STEM challenge using simple supplies. Perfect for the multi-grade level teacher.

Please note this experiment works best with the classic Necco Sweethearts which are now sold by SpanglerCandy or Brach's Tiny Conversation Hearts. However, we can not guarantee how the hearts will work. Make sure you test the experiment first and have raisins as a backup plan. Companies do change their recipe and different brands of soda pop may act differently. This experiment is so much fun, but we want to make sure you have the correct supplies. Always remember this is science and things may not always go as planned. We will provide you with lots of tips to improve success.

This bundle contains all 3 versions of Dancing Candy Hearts. Each version is differentiated for abilities and the NGSS. K/1st tests with and without carbonation and includes exploration station ideas. 2nd/3rd grade increases the carbonation to 3 levels and includes an exploration challenge and a STEM challenge. 4th/5th grade increases the carbonation with one more level and completes 3 trials. It also contains the exploration challenge and STEM challenge. Click each one below to find out more details.

Dancing Candy Heart Experiment: A Floating And Sinking Lab For K-1

Valentine Candy Heart Science: A Density And Buoyancy Lab For Grades 2 And 3

Valentine Candy Heart Science: A Density And Buoyancy Lab For Grades 4 And 5

This density and buoyancy unit has it all. The classic dancing raisin experiment has been taken up a notch by using candy hearts. The integration of an independent and dependent variable makes it meet *NGSS Science and Engineering Practices. Students follow the scientific method in a journal created for their age level. After the investigation students will relate it to the real world by learning how life jackets work. The science behind dancing candy hearts will amaze you and your students.

Uses simple and easily available supplies: Tall glasses, oil, Necco Sweethearts, diet soda, regular soda, stopwatch, paper towels, and other materials you choose for the exploration stations and STEM Challenge.

We hope you will enjoy this density and buoyancy unit as much as we do. It checks the boxes on the standards and allows the teacher to have a holiday-themed lesson. The included standards will allow you to show administrators that standards are being met. We picked apart the science and even uncovered a little secret ingredient to make the lab more successful.
