In this activity, each student is given a sealed box of candy hearts. Using the graphic organizer, they are to make a hypothesis as to how many of each color of hearts is in the box. After they have made the hypothesis, they begin the procedure of making a graph to determine the data. The students then compare their hypothesis with the actual data.
An extension/differentiated activity is also provided in which students construct an inquiry of their own relative to the candy hearts. Students can also generate hypotheses about how the candy is made. There is a weblink with information about the history and production of the conversation hearts.
