Literacy Centers

Broken Hearts – a differentiated CVC/CVCe activity
RF.K.2d

Version 1: Students match the picture and CVC word broken heart puzzles. Then they use the recording sheet to find the picture and write the CVC word in the boxes.

Cupid Shuffle – a differentiated sentence activity
RF.K.1a, RF.K.1b, RF.K.1c

Version 1: Students unscramble the color coded cupid cloud word cards to build a sentence. They color the heart on the recording sheet the color of the heart on the cards and write the formed sentence.

Version2: Students unscramble the color coded cupid cloud multi-word cards to build a sentence. They color the heart on the recording sheet the color of the heart on the cards and write the formed sentence.

Family Hearts – a differentiated word family activity
RF.K.2a, RF.K.2d, RFK.3d

Version 1: Students sort the word family picture conversation hearts onto the word family candy jars. Within each jar there are four squares with the word family words inside. Students match the picture to the word. On the recording sheet, students write the word from the conversation heart in a heart and color it the color of the candy.

Version 2: Students sort the word family word conversation hearts onto the word family candy jars. On the recording sheet, students color the heart with a picture of the word inside. They color the heart the color of the candy.

Sight Word Letters – a differentiated sight word activity
RF.K.3c

Version 1: Students choose a heart envelope and read the sight word. Then they find the matching sight word heart card. On the recording sheet, students write the word in a heart with a white crayon. Then they color the heart with a pink or red marker.

Version 2: Students choose a heart envelope and read the sight word. Then they use the heart letter cards to build the sight word. On the recording sheet, students write the word in a heart with a white crayon. Then they color the heart with a pink or red marker.

Valentine Write the Room – a differentiated write the room activity
RF.K.1b, L.K.1a

Version 1: Students look for valentine word cards around the classroom. When they find one, they match the picture on the recording sheet and trace the word.

Version 2: Students look for valentine word cards around the classroom. When they find one, they match the picture on the recording sheet and write the word.

Math Centers

Candy Combinations – a differentiated set making activity
K.OA.A.1, K.OA.A.4

Version 1: Make sets to 5. Students choose a candy box card and count how many candies are inside. On the recording sheet, match the letter on the card and fill in the numbers of the set on ___ and ___ is 5.

Version 2: Make sets to 10. Students choose a candy box card and count how many candies are inside. On the recording sheet, match the letter on the card and fill in the numbers of the set on ___ and ___ is 10.

Conversation Hearts - a differentiated graphing activity.
K.CC.A3, K.CC.B.4, K.CC.B.5, K.CC.C.6

Version 1: Students count “how many?” of five different colored conversation hearts in the candy jar. After counting each one, they color in the number of squares next to that same heart on the recording sheet. Counting up to five.

Version 2: Students count “how many?” of five different colored conversation hearts in the candy jar. After counting each one, they color in the number of squares next to that same heart on the recording sheet. Then they answer two questions about more or less using their graph they made. Counting up to eight.

Hearts – a differentiated addition activity
K.OA.A.1, K.OA.A.5

Version 1: Students use the hearts addition cards to add how many hearts they see. On the recording sheet, they find the matching letter. They draw the hearts from the cards and write how many.

Version 2: Students use the hearts addition cards to add how many hearts they see. On the recording sheet, they find the matching letter. They write an addition sentence to represent the hearts.

Sweet Subitizing – a differentiated number sense activity
K.CC.B.4, K.CC.B.5

Version 1: Students match the four-part puzzle pieces to the ones that show the same amount. On the recording sheet, students find the matching letter and write how many.

Version 2: Students match the three-part puzzle pieces to the ones that show the same amount. On the recording sheet, students find the matching letter and write how many.

Two Part Hearts – a differentiated decomposing activity
K.OA.A3, K.OA.A.4, K.OA.A.5

Version 1: Students choose a hearts domino card and find the whole. On the recording sheet, find the matching letter and write the whole inside the heart.

Version 2: Students choose a hearts domino card and find the missing part. On the recording sheet, find the matching letter and write the missing part inside the heart.
