This fun activity challenges students to combine their logic and reasoning skills with the concept of adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators (units). Students must match the correct sum or difference (written in simplest form and mixed numbers if possible) to the fraction expression. As they put the pieces together, they must use their logic to complete the whole heart.

The completed puzzle can be glued down on construction paper as a fun Valentine's bulletin board or work display.

Included in this file are directions for preparing the puzzles, student directions for completing it, the puzzle, and an optional recording sheet with answer key.

This activity makes a great individual or partner activity.

Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, 𝘒/𝘣 + 𝘀/π˜₯ = (𝘒π˜₯ + 𝘣𝘀)/𝘣π˜₯.)
