This game is great for expressive language skills, but you can also use it to target categories, associations, describing, articulation, word matching, phonological awareness skills, synonyms, antonyms, conversation skills, turn taking, …the list is pretty endless.
Each student takes a turn picking out a word. They must answer the question “What does _____ have to do with Valentine’s Day? How are they related?” The student’s answer must be in a complete sentence and must have the call word and “Love,” “Valentine” or “Valentine’s Day” in the answer. (Ex: “What does Honey have to do with Valentine’s Day?” Honey is a nickname for our Valentine, or the ones we love.) When the student answers correctly, all students with that call word on their board can cover that word with a marker, chip, animal cracker, skittles, etc…. If the answer is incorrect, or not in sentence form, another student may have a turn to answer that question. The student who covers 5 in a row first (vertically, horizontally, or diagonally) wins. Of course you can play Blackout by covering all the words, or a shorter version by declaring that the first person to cover any 5 words on the board is the winner. Have Fun!
