Love Potion Number 9: Stacking Colors Density Lab withClaim, Evidence, and Reasoning
VALENTINES DAY is just around the corner and I have created this lab and Claim, Evidence, Reasoning, Rebuttal scenario for students to make a secret “Love Potion” to entrance their sweetheart! Of course, this lab would also work anytime when teaching the concept of Density and the Salinity of salt water.
In this lab, students will first read an article that gives a little mythological story about Cupid and his love for Psyche. After the students read this they continue learning about density and how different concentrations of salt make liquids more or less dense. The background knowledge section also discusses osmosis, hypertonic and hypotonic solutions and their effect on the cell membrane.
Once the reading is complete, the students will design an easy lab using the materials you have set out and prepared for them. (salt water solutions, beakers, test tubes) Each student will then write a C.E.R.R. summary of their research and findings. I think this is the perfect lab for Valentine’s day I know your students will enjoy this activity.
