This is a Valentine's Day Steam Activity Workbook. All you need is candy hearts, straws, pencils and tape measurers. The goal of the first part is to see which student can build the tallest candy heart tower using the three different models. The first is a single stacked candy heart tower. See how many candy hearts you can put on top of another one by one to make one vertical tower. The next model is a double stacked tower. Have the students create two vertical towers next to each other. Try and see if the two towers standing side by side allow the towers to get taller since they can lean against each other. The final model is a pyramid. Start off with two candy hearts on the bottom and one on top of those. Then add a third to the bottom, a second on the second row and one more on top of those. Continue in this manner.
The next part of this activity is to see who can build the strongest candy heart tower. Taking what the kids learned from the tallest, build a new tower using their preferred design. Then you have them measure 20 inches away from their tower and hold the end of their straw there and blow. It helps if you have a partner blow so you know they are blowing their hardest. It helps to yield the most scientific results. A chart and graph are included to conclude that portion of the activity.
