Happy February! Are you looking for an easy way to incorporate daily writing into your classroom without lots of preparation? Here's an enjoyable, low-prep method to engage students in writing they'll WANT to do!
Let’s be honest, sometimes kids see writing as a chore. To combat this, I try to come up with fun, meaningful ways to get my students to write to each other. These monthly/holiday themed Tell-A-Grams encourage kids (and adults!) to catch others doing positive things throughout the day. They’re also an easy way to let kids know just how awesome they are!
Just as real-life telegrams get to the point with a minimum of words, the writing space provided is just enough to keep even the most reluctant writer from being discouraged!
I keep a stack of these in our classroom and encourage students to help themselves. Not only do they write to each other, they write to the principal, the secretaries, the librarians, their families—anybody they can think of! I also write some out each day and attach to assignments or just hand to students. It’s so rewarding to see these bits of good news hanging inside lockers at the end of the day.
