Your students will love this edible math activity centered on Valentine's Day! Three-digit subtraction with regrouping is a tough skill for second graders to master. It's also a tough skill for third graders to demonstrate consistently. Grab some tasty valentine treats, count, graph, and create a story problem about the sprinkles on the treat. Details on the kind of treat I used are included.
I have also included three *valentine-themed riddles. Students solve three-digit subtraction problems to crack the code. Your students will be chuckling at the corny valentine riddles and exercising their regrouping skills to subtract.
In addition, there are two games -- I Have, Who Has...? focusing on three-digit expanded notation and number words, and Spin a Heartgirl or Heartboy. Students subtract to add each part of their Heartgirl or Heartboy. These are perfect for small math groups, partners, or independent practice.
*Answer keys for the three valentine riddles are included.
Happy Valentine's Day!
