# Valentine's Common Core Group & Center Activity

### PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This whole-group interactive math activity and "centers" extension was carefully designed with questions and answers on valentine's cards to be sure students were solving Common Core aligned problems with multiple partners. While mingling with others in search of the correct matching valentine this activity not only has them working on rigorous Common Core math content, but it keeps them engaged on several levels!

With each card only requiring four rounds of play, the task is easily manageable for both teacher and student. The activity includes:

* 10 different student cards (labeled A-J)
* Two types of blank cards for teachers to create their own
* Instructions
* Student recording form

Each student card includes:
* Time
* Multi-step problem-solving
* Solving for unknowns in a variety of locations
* Comparing algorithyms using greater than and less than

First, it was designed to be taught as a whole group activity requiring students to mingle about and find whom in the room has the answer to the problem on their valentine's card. Students will need to think critically and use math reasoning skills with a partner which also allows them to practice speaking and listening skills in their interactions with others.

After students have had the ability to play the game several times, you have the opportunity to use the cards at centers and allow students to score and keep track of their progress on a student record form, which is included. Again, helping to make learning visible and engaging.

This may be a great Valentine week activity, but we just LOVE math, so we can use it the rest of the year!
