Looking for a thoughtful, quick, and creative close reading lesson for Valentine's Day that covers several standards for your middle or high school students? I love to bring holiday themed lessons in when I can, but I am always very cautious to choose lessons that are standards-based. This mini-lesson meets both requirements perfectly!
Student Experience: Students exercise summarizing and close reading skills as they read the article about a couple whose love brought them back together after several decades. Next, students will respond to the article using either the open-ended or multiple choice questions. The questions are primarily structured to target common core ELA standards, but I have included some optional questions that could be supplemented to meet history standards. You can close the lesson by having students respond to the creative, poetry-writing extension project. This article's “love” theme makes it perfect for Valentine’s Day.
-Formal lesson plan
-Super simple sub sheet
