Product Description ❤️

This no-prep Valentine's activity will engage students by making them think logically through a fun reasoning puzzle. This activity is student-tested and results-driven in that it helps students practice reading strategies such as determining importance, making inferences, and synthesizing information. Because students practice the art of reading through options (clues) and eliminating options that are not correct, they become stronger test takers.

Why Use This Activity

Besides practicing determining importance and making inferences, this activity requires students to pay careful attention to clues and eliminate possibilities that are not correct. Students have to reread clues multiple times, sometimes starting over from the first clue to logically connect the options to the correct categories.

This type of logical thinking mimics the type of thinking that is practiced on many standardized assessments when it comes to multiple choice questions. Students get tricked by the test designer because students have difficulty reading all the options, and then thinking logically about the choices.

This activity allows students the practice of reading through the clues multiple times. In addition, good test takers eliminate choices they know are incorrect. This activity practices this skill by having students eliminate (cross out) options either stated in the text, or implied. As students eliminate options, the correct answers begin to surface. The best part about all of this learning is that students are engaged and challenged while it is happening!

How long does this activity last

Once students understand how to solve the puzzle, and get a grasp on the logical thinking that takes place within the clues, each individual activity can take anywhere between 15 to 30 minutes. This resource only includes 1 puzzle, however, we offer a Valentine's Day Reasoning Puzzle Bundle for 4th Grade that has three leveled puzzles that help differentiate for different students, or help students become familiar with the puzzles, and then try a more challenging puzzle.

How do I know if my students are successful

One way to measure student success is with the successful completion of the puzzle. However, an even more powerful opportunity for success is to listen to the conversations of students as they explain their reasoning behind eliminating certain options under each category. This provides anecdotal opportunities for the teacher to see who is "getting It" or "isn't there yet." This conversations force students to defend their thinking.

How and when do you use this problem type in class

There are many ways to use this activity. I have used this activity with my students during:

❤️ Reading Centers

❤️ Enrichments
