A Valentine’s Day twist coupled with factoring trinomials makes this activity/worksheet geared for Algebra I or II students a win. All 26 trinomial expressions have a leading coefficient greater than 1 (a>1). Built-in Valentine themed answer message makes grading regular factoring practice a snap!
The Holiday Fun:
Students factor 15 random problems (out of 26 problems) before receiving one of the 6 Valentine cards. Students use answers to decode the Valentine’s hidden message. I enjoy hand selecting the recipient of the message, matching the message to the student’s personality. Since the Valentine is addressed “To My Wonderful Teacher,” students are essentially sending you, the teacher, the Valentine when they turn in their work. “Oh what thoughtful students I have!”
Factoring standard form quadratic expressions with a leading coefficient greater than 1 -- it just takes some practice for students to get the hang of it. Find 26 trinomials that will work well for any factoring method you teach students.
