Product Description
This literacy resource for Valentine's Day product pairs fiction with non-fiction. Mr. Prickles: A Quill Fated Love Story by Kara Lareau is an adorable story of a misunderstood porcupine. No one wants to be friends with him because of his looks, and that affects his personality too. It’s a great book to discuss friendship, and judging a person (or porcupine in this case) based on their looks, not on their character.

Note: The CCSS are included in the Table Of Contents in this product for suggested grades 2-4.

About this product:
*I’ve included two activities students may complete if you decide to do this book as a read aloud or even a small group.

* I recommend giving every student a copy of the non-fiction article in this pack called "Porcupine Fact File." This could work before reading the book or after. Either way, the non-fiction portion of this mini-unit sheds light on why a porcupine might be misunderstood in a fun and factual way. Use the comprehension questions that follow as an assessment.

*I’ve chosen this book as a mentor text to have students write a personal narrative about a time when they had a prickly problem.
The word prickly has multiple meanings, so be sure to talk about its definition in relation to this assignment.

*You’ll find all the tools of the writing process to use with your students in this pack. The only tool I did not include was a rubric, simply because this is a VERY specific grading tool by class, school and district. Many schools have adopted their own personal narrative rubric that they use universally, so I do not wish to impose my own. There is an editing checklist in which the teacher can add suggestions.

* I encourage you to use the story starter. Either model for your class how to complete it, or use it as a shared writing activity. This is great for struggling writers! Leave time to share stories upon completion.
