Valentine's Day Conversation Heart Thematic Unit:

Science Experiment, Fractions, Probability, & More

Are you looking for fun lessons for Valentine's Day that are still Standards related? This unit includes everything you need for a day of lessons around Valentine's Day candy hearts:

  • fractions - a different 2-page activity for each grade (3rd, 4th, & 5th)
  • probability
  • an acid-base science experiment with a reading passage
  • Bonus Activities in Bundle: postcards, valentine paper bag mailbox, & word cloud

All of the activities need minimal supplies. The math & science activities use conversation hearts and/or Sweetarts (these are better for the experiment.) The science experiment uses basic supplies (vinegar and baking soda.) The mailbox activity uses construction paper and paper bags, but cereal boxes or shoe boxes could be used instead.

These lessons can be used individually or as a thematic mini-unit.

The 6 lessons include:

  • Secret Valentine - a character building activity where students think about the positive traits of the other students in their class.
  • Valentine Postcards - Students write a postcard to someone important in their life. A postcard template is included, and students design the front of the postcard.
  • Sweetarts Science - Learn about acids & bases in a quick science experiment. Students read a short passage after the experiment to analyze what happened during the experiment.
  • Candy Heart Fractions - Three different fraction lessons are included, so teachers can use it with grades 3, 4, or 5. The lessons could also be used for differentiation.
  • Candy Probability - Students use conversation hearts in an introductory lesson on probability.
  • Grocery Bag Mailboxes - Students design their Valentine mailbox completely out of hearts. Students plan their design and then create it on a grocery bag (or a cereal box.)
