Valentine's Day - Conversation Heart Science Lab - Grades 5-8 / PPT

This activity allows students to practice their scientific inquiry skills while still having fun for Valentine's Day! The Out of this World Conversation Heart Science Lab provides a scenario where an astronaut has dropped some conversation hearts on the moon and a friendly, yet curious, alien wants to investigate these candy hearts. The astronaut invites the alien back to the space station to further experiment.


This lab encourages students to construct a scientific question, create a hypothesis, determine an operational definition, outline independent, dependent, and controlled variables, conduct an experiment about how the different temperatures of liquid affects how fast a candy heart can dissolve, make observations, collect data, graph data, and analyze results to draw conclusions. Each step of the procedures are illustrated to help students follow along.
