Have your students up and moving as they count the room with this fun Valentine Candy Heart themed counting and number activity perfect for your Winter Math activities. Learning to count and write numbers is so much more fun when you can move around the room, and that's where count the room comes in. Students scoot from one card to the next, counting the candy hearts in the jar on each card and writing the number on their recording sheet.

Whether you call it count the room, scoot, or roam the room, having your students moving while they are learning seems to make the learning more fun and engaging for your kiddos.

Using Count the Room activities are easy. Just print, laminate (if wanted for durability) cut apart then place around the room using tape, Blue Tac/Poster Putty or pins (depending on your wall). I recommend keeping them at a level students can reach so they can one to one count as needed. Provide each student with a recording sheet (clipboard will make it easier for them to write) and they go from card to card counting the pictures and writing their answer on the recording sheet.

This pack includes picture counting cards for numbers 1-20, however you can choose to either use the whole set or only the numbers 1-10. There are several levels of recording sheets included allowing your students to both practice their counting and introducing addition and subtraction. All recording sheets come in both 1-10 and 1-20 to allow you to differentiate as required.

Included in the Valentines Day Count the Room pack is:

• Picture cards 1-10 - each card has a jar of valentine candy hearts, your students count the fish and write the number on their recording sheet.
• Picture cards 11-20 - each card has 2 jars of valentine candy hearts. One jar has 10 candy hearts and the other jar has the remaining candy hearts to be counted. This set is designed to help your students to recognize a set of 10 and (when ready) count on from 10 to find the answer.
• Numeral Cards 1-20. To allow you to extend the math activity there are numeral cards to creating a matching and/or memory game. Students need to match the correct number card to the valentine candy heart jar/jars.
• Recording sheets for numbers 1-10 and 1-20. Students count the valentine candy hearts in the jar/s and write the number. Recording sheets have the numbers needed along the bottom to aid students in knowing the correct formation of the numbers.
• Recording sheet option 2 (1-10 & 1-20). Count and add 1. Students count the valentine candy hearts in the jar/s and write the number, then add 1 more and write the new number. Recording sheets have the numbers needed along the bottom to aid students in knowing the correct formation of the numbers.
• Recording sheet option 3 (1-10 & 1-20). Count and add 2. Students count the valentine candy hearts in the jar/s and write the number, then add 2 more and write the new number. Recording sheets have the numbers needed along the bottom to aid students in knowing the correct formation of the numbers.
• Recording sheet option 4 (1-10 & 1-20). Count and add 5. Students count the valentine candy hearts in the jar/s and write the number, then add 5 more and write the new number. Recording sheets have the numbers needed along the bottom to aid students in knowing the correct formation of the numbers.
• Recording sheet option 5 (1-10 & 1-20). Count and add 10. Students count the valentine candy hearts in the jar/s and write the number, then add 10 more and write the new number. Recording sheets have the numbers needed along the bottom to aid students in knowing the correct formation of the numbers.
• Recording sheet option 6 (1-10 & 1-20). Count and subtract 1. Students count the valentine candy hearts in the jar/s and write the number, then subtract 1 and write the new number. Recording sheets have the numbers needed along the bottom to aid students in knowing the correct formation of the numbers.

You can also use this activity as a math center where students pick a card, count the objects and record their answer on the recording sheet.
