Use this ready-to-go, creative writing activity to celebrate Valentine’s Day with your class. A presentation prepares students with a brief history of Valentine writing & cards and then outlines the creative poetry writing activity: fan poems. Students write Valentine fan poems to their favorite celebrities, using one of three differentiated task sheets, so strong and weak writers alike can practice writing skills. Students complete the activity by ‘publishing’ their poem on good copy, teen-appropriate, Valentine-themed paper... perfect for display.

The creative poetry writing activity has students write a ‘fan poem’ to a celebrity they admire; in the poem, students describe the celebrity’s admirable qualities. Students or teachers can select from 1 of 3 differentiated poetic forms:

  • Acrostic: an easy-to-complete poetic form
  • Anagram: a medium-difficulty poetic form
  • Cinquain: a challenging poetic form.

The task sheets describe each poetic form, give an exemplar text, and provide all instructions.

I’ve also included teaching notes AND a quick holistic rubric to grade student work.
